It may be time to see a board-certified dermatologist. Certainly, over-the-counter therapies can start with zinc pyrithione and selenium sulfide. However, these anti-yeast agents just aren’t strong enough to combat the inflammation, which results in the ‘scaliness’ that accompanies dandruff. In these cases, we’d recommend seeing a board-certified dermatologist for the administration of some anti-inflammatories to the scalp that can be a nice adjunctive therapy when anti-yeast agents don’t work alone.
