Rosacea: Laser Therapy for Rosacea

Author: Dr. Bobby Buka

There is no cure for rosacea, but there are treatments that can ease the discomfort caused by the disease. Oral antibiotics can help reduce inflammation and topical agents can help shrink blood vessels so that they are not as noticeable. Laser surgery is a method that is used by dermatologists to eliminate visible blood vessels and decrease facial redness. It also may help decrease the number of flare-ups that patients may experience and has reduced blushing, dryness, swelling and sensitivity.

The cause of rosacea is unknown but it is thought to be a result of environmental and hereditary factors. Factors that tend to aggravate the condition include hot beverages, spicy foods, alcohol, stress and sunlight. If left untreated, rosacea can worsen and eventually lead to psychological and emotional problems due to the effects on an individual’s personal appearance.

The dermatologists at Bobby Buka, MD, treat rosacea using a pulse dye laser. The device works by emitting a light that safely shrinks and collapses abnormal blood vessels. In general, depending on the size of the area affected, sessions take less than 30 minutes and several sessions may be required to obtain the best results. Many patients see a visible improvement in their condition after one treatment.
